Souk Kafe's Manna |
Manna - this word has been synonymous to blessing when it comes to the Catholic faith but at Souk Kafe, their Mana is their own brand of heavenly pizza bread which is cooked the moment you order it. What you get is freshly prepared soft baked flat bread covered with a generous spread of melted cheese. It was simply addicting and fun too as you get to do anything with how you want to eat the Manna Pizza - fold it, you can strip it then roll it. This whole size can be shared with your eating buddies and it only costs (Php99). The original Mediterranean flavor uses zaatar, a strong Middle Eastern flavor blend of spices and labaneh a sour Middle Eastern goat's milk cream cheese. Souk Kafe's Manna is a definite palate pleaser at an affordable tag.

Helwa Mangga from Souk Kafe |
For dessert, I sampled their mango dessert called Helwa Mangga which is made with fresh ripe and sweet mangoes that has been flambed. This flamed dessert is added with whipped cream and creatively designed chocolate and strawberry syrup as the white platter serves as its blank canvas.
With an influence from the Silk Road of the Oriental-Middle Eastern-Mediterranean cuisine, Souk Kafe offers an interesting array of flavors from their Biryani using local rice but flavored with about 10 spices, Chicken Vindaloo - a curry dish, Cibamel - another flamed dessert and their famous Turkish Coffee served with a small long-handled Turkish pot known as Ibrik.

Whether it's just a regular weekend or a long one, the proximity of Tagaytay City to Metro Manila makes it a convenient weekend sojourn for anyone wanting to unwind. Amidst the cool crisp air, my friends and I started our weekend getaway with a hearty breakfast to pump us for a long day of adventure. There are numerous dining places in Tagaytay City but only few deliver sumptuous breakfast meals without breaking your wallets. And when craving for delicious English pies, there is only one place to head to - Bag of Beans, the home of English pies and breads when in this bucolic ridge.
Bag of Beans has evolved through the years. You would be surprised that their seemingly small bakeshop along Aguinaldo Highway has so much more to offer. To the left (if you're facing their bakeshop), you have to walk down the stairs. Lo and behold, what welcomes you, aside from their house bird, are several spots where you can enjoy your meals with your buddies.
Two indoor areas at Bag of Beans
Al fresco, the garden is all yours, you can also opt for their Pavillion with about six tables and a collection of souvenir pieces from Asian travels. Another room is like a large living room with long heavy wooden tables and chairs with white throw pillows. This room is made lovelier with fresh flower blooms displayed in various areas. Though indoors, you will still enjoy the cool breeze outside with their giant inclined screened windows surrounding you. Though I feel homey at this third area, we dined al fresco to commune with nature.
Bag of Bean's Omelette |
What's good with Bag of Beans is that they have an all-day-breakfast menu so you can enjoy their numerous hearty breakfast at your whim. I sampled their Omelette (Php275) made with three eggs, mushroom, tomatoes, onions and cheese. The omellete is served with your choice of sausage or bacon plus bread and butter on the side.
Cinnamon & Raisin Bread |
Bag of Beans is known for two things, their Cinnamon & Raisin Bread and their English Pies so to taste was a must. The Cinnamon & Raisin Bread (Php80) was addicting - aromatic and beautifully laid on our table. Each slice was filled with raisins and you know it was freshly made since it was soft and not airy.
Bag of Bean's Sheperd's Pie |
Your decision-making skills will have to be tested when choosing from their pies, they offer Beef & Veggie, Steak & Kidney, Chicken & Vegetable, Vegetable Pie, Apple Pie, Mixed Fruit Pie, Pineapple Pie and my all-time-favorite, Chicken Empanada. Their best-seller would have to be Shepherd's Pie which comes in two sizes, single (Php105) and family - 9 inches wide (Php420).

Intrigued by its name, inspired by the Greek goddess of hearth, fire and entertainment, some friends accompanied me to an evening of tete-a-tete with the man behind this charming country-European dining destination, Chateau Hestia.
I have been hearing about Bacoor, Cavite’s halo-halo treasure called Digman and not until I worked on my Cavite article for Republic of 7107 Island Travel Magazine that I was able to visit this legendary halo-halo sanctuary.
The hunt was quite an adventure. Though I am with my Caviteña friend Michelle, we braved the streets of Bacoor by commute. Good thing her brother Ryan was just a phone call away to monitor us and made sure we did not make the wrong turns or end up in another area.
Once we got down from the jeepney at Barangay Digman, just a block away, we saw a signage with an inscription “Original Digman Halo-Halo Reg. Phil. Pat Off” and an arrow pointing to the left. This was at the corner of Rubio Street, Barangay Digman in Bacoor.

Mounds of Halo-Halo ingredients at Original Digman Halo-Halo in Bacoor, Cavite |
As we enter the quaint eatery with several white monoblock chairs and tables, mounds of halo-halo ingredients welcomed us. I could not help myself as I instantly ordered my very first Digman Halo-Halo. To make this tall cooler more satisfying, I sampled their home made Siopao and Empanada.
Towering cold desserts of the Original Digman Halo-Halo
Digman’s Halo-Halo was overflowing with freshly made ingredients, cooked the very early morning and ready for the taking before they open at 10am. On regular days, you can savor 12 ingredients, while summer days bring more ingredients with fruits in season.
Regulars are sweetened bananas, pinipig, kundol, beans, langka, gulaman, garbanzos, kaong, nata de coco and topped with ube halaya and leche flan. You can also have it your way, as one elder ordered a tall glass without beans. I myself would prefer not to have garbanzos and beans in my cold comfort. Oh did I mention that this tall glass only costs Php50? (I last visited February 2010)

This is the facade of the famous Original Digman Halo-Halo in Bacoor, Cavite with Mr. Edilberto |
Edilberto with sister Donita now manages their mother’s store which was first built during the Japanese invasion. During my return for the interview, Edilberto was ecstatic as he recalls how his mother’s venture has been successful with the simple business. What started as a nipa hut is now a two-storey concrete structure. Edilberto prides that even celebrities like the King of Comedy Dolphy would order from his residence just to have his fill of the tall glass of Digman’s Halo-Halo.
Do you love this iconic
layered Pinoy dessert then I am sure you will love Aling Taleng’s Halo-Halo.
