EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT WITH PIAYA : A BACOLOD CITY DELICACY

It's been two months and 13 days since I have written my last post for my precious food blog which featured Minnie's Sweet Creations. Time indeed flies fast as we are in the last quarter of 2012. Being a glorious month for the Negrenses, allow me to partake in their festivities and highlight some of my favorites when in Bacolod City.

MINNIE'S SWEET CREATIONS : PINOY MADE IN THE LAND OF OZ

Vintage Cupcakes by Minnie's Sweet Creations

Over the past couple of years, I would read from the papers that young individuals or couples venture into creating their own business apart from juggling their day jobs. Some to speed up their race in creating a better life while some stumbled upon a new found hobby that became their life's passion. I can very much relate to the latter and so is my featured home-made sweet sensations.

I am saddened by this news. Perhaps, every ice cream lover in the Philippines would be too. Last June, I heard Haagen-Dazs will cease its operation in the Philippines.

LIFE IS SWEET YEAR 2 : CHILL TIME AT AUSTRALIA'S COLD ROCK ICE CREAMERY

Another horrendous week passed. Meeting deadlines, overnight editing of my weekly TV show, brainstorming for events, not to mention multitasking for the two blogs that I am hosting plus collating materials for my magazine articles. It's quite toxic and I am positive most of you fellow food lovers have experienced quite a taxing week as well.

NACHO KING THE PERFECT SNACK PARTNER AT THE MOVIES

I am a movie buff. It is one of my favorite pastime especially when there is nothing good to watch on local free TV. You see (for the younger generations), during the 80s and 90s we were not blessed with hundreds of cable channels and YouTube was not even born yet. Oh, I hate to recall these things, I feel so old (hahaha)!

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT DINES AT SHI LIN

When it comes to cuisines other than Filipino, I highly favor Italian and Chinese (in that particular order). I have found myself swinging to various Italian and Chinese restaurants since the beginning of 2012. Ecstatic with the fact that there are now numerous dining spots that are striving to be as authentic as possible. Now comes Taiwanese cuisine invading the dining scene.

Don't you just love to sit in Shi Lin's comfy chairs?

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT WITH HERITAGE DINING AT PAMANA RESTAURANT

Today marks the 114th celebration of the Philippine Independence. June 12, 1898 marks that historic event in world history where the Filipino people were no longer slaves of the Spaniards and the nation's independence was proclaimed in Kawit, Cavite.

Panoramic view of Taal Lake and Volcano from Tagaytay Ridge
Over the years, the historic luster of the province of Cavite has faded and other provinces made their marks as generations passed. But for me, Cavite will always be a charming province, full of possibilities - not only because some of my ancestors hail from this part of the archipelago, but because of one of my favorite vacation destinations - Tagaytay City.

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT AT BACOLOD CITY's MANOKAN COUNTRY

It has been a running joke when I was growing up that my love for fried chicken was eternal. Whenever people would ask me what our viand was, I was told that my constant answer was fried chicken even if our viand was Adobo, Menudo or Sinigang na Baboy.

A gamut of nothing but Chicken

Well, gone are the days for all things "fried chicken" as I get to enjoy other dishes - Breaded Chicken, Roasted Chicken, Hainanese Chicken, Chicken Lechon and of course, Chicken Inasal.

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT WITH BORACAY'S BEST BURGER

3-Kilometer stretch of Boracay Island (from a recent trip)

When I first stepped into the pristine powdery sand of the Philippine's foremost vacation destination six years ago in 2006, adventure sports nor other parts of Boracay Island was not given much attention unlike today.

Apart from the obvious reason - the exemplary beauty of the sandy white beach with about three kilometers stretching from what is known as Station 1, 2 and 3, there was one thing that visitors have been accustomed to - it was imperative to taste Boracay at its purest form.

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT : SWEET INDULGENCES AT MY MOTHER'S GARDEN

The month of May would always be referred to as the Mother's Day Month. Though I may be featuring this dining destination at the end of May, I wanted to save the best for last - after all, you need not celebrate Mother's Day only during May, we may all show our love and affection for our dear Mothers all-day, everyday.

My Mother's Garden (or what it was formerly called) has been a serendipitous encounter for me. I came to this house cum dining by reservations for the food and little did I know that the house is a national landmark.

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT AT BONCHON

More than one month have passed and I have not published a single entry here. What have I been doing lately? Aside from doing a weekly TV show, an event that consumed most of my waking hours, trying to catch up on my articles for various magazines, I have been eating - and eating have I been doing.

Assorted Bonchon Chicken

For my first post at Monday Madness for the month of May, this restaurant needs no further introduction - Chicken Bonchon Philippines.

What's the fuss all about? New York Times, GQ and Esquire magazines hail Chicken Bonchon as the best chicken in America.

KITCHEN GODDESS WITHIN : TUNA BASIL PASTA

When I conceptualized this humble food blog of mine, back in 2010 (but was officially launched in January 2011), I had ten SECTIONS in mind. My constant deliriously delicious dining discoveries focuses on only a few sections - Bon Appetit, 7107 Flavors, Burp - for eat-all-you-can dining spree, Nothing But Chocolate and Desserts Unlimited. One section that I have not yet tackled or got the chance to post a single article is the section Kitchen Goddess.

Kitchen Goddess is all about kitchen tips and easy-to-do recipes. My first Kitchen Goddess post is just that - an easy to do recipe which my family has enjoyed over the years. My own version of Tuna Basil Pasta.

I first encountered the idea of tuna pasta when I had a meeting with my previous TV producer for the cooking show we were doing back in 2003. Her recipe was quite different though, using black pitted olives, capers, chili flakes and tuna flakes. It was pretty good that I wanted seconds of this interesting dish. Back then, I was only familiar with two kinds of pasta - tomato and cream based.

One day when I was famished and looking for some snacks, all I could find were spaghetti noodles, garlic, tuna flakes and some spices. Good thing there was a bottle of Olive oil and a new dish was born.

Here's my simple, easy-to-do, absolutely yummy and healthy dish. Hope you enjoy!

NEWEST ICE CREAM ON THE BLOCK : MAGNUM BELGIAN CHOCOLATE-COATED ICE CREAM

Seldom will you see that I follow the food craze in the Philippines, and as you can see, it took me a few weeks before I talk about my experience with Manila's newest ice cream craze. But the thought of posting this has lingered my mind since March, when I first tasted it. How can I not forget that night (March 16) when I rushed to Ministop just before I went home. I wanted my usual ice drop just to relax me after a long day, when lo and behold, I saw this interesting wrapper with gold fonts that was shouting at me "taste me!"

Honestly, I have not seen any TV commercial, have not heard any radio plugs nor checked my news feed in Twitter and Facebook. I followed my gut and my pure desire to try this tempting ice cream chocolate-flavored (as frequent readers of this food blog know that I am a sucker for all things sweet and ice cream indulgences). It was a shocker though that this simple bar costs Php55 at Ministop (Php50 at SM Malls), and I said to myself, this should be worth every dime.

Magnum Ice Cream - covered in luscious Belgian chocolate!

After ten minutes of travel to my house, I rushed and opened the Magnum wrapper and was quite pleased that it has not melted the ice cream. One bite and I could taste the thick, smooth Belgian chocolate that covers a rich cream. For me, Belgian chocolate is one of life's simple indulgences - and I was in Belgian chocolate heaven, bite after bite.

Many of you have tasted, experienced and judged, over the last couple of weeks, since Magnum has hit quite a phenomenal food craze among food lovers and curious palates, I was quite pleased with my new discovery. Little did I know that it has caught the country by storm and it seems everywhere I go, people were looking for Magnum, or buying one. Magnum was even a trending topic at Twitter and even at my work - where at some point in time, a number of my colleagues would ask me if I have tasted this.

There are three flavors available in the Philippines right now, Magnum Classic (Vanilla flavored ice cream), Magnum Chocolate Truffle (chocolate ice cream with a swirl of truffle) and Magnum Almond (creamy vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate and almonds). I have only tasted Magnum Classic twice and I am yet to experience what Magnum Chocolate Truffle and Magnum Almond would taste like. I hope it's as good as Magnum Classic if not better.

Magnum has been available in the U.S. since 1989 and has eight flavors : Double Caramel, Double Chocolate, Classic, Almond, White, Dark with two new flavors Mint and Mochaccino. Magnum in the US is also available in mini sizes for Classic and Almond.

Hope you continue to check out Eat To Your Heart's Content for deliriously delicious dining discoveries. As I always say, Live Well, Laugh Often, Eat To Your Heart's Content!

HOT FOR THIS CAKE VERSION : A BACOLOD CITY STREET FOOD

I was fortunate to return to the Philippines' City of Smiles during the first week of October 2011. The streets of Bacolod City were vibrant with the upcoming celebration of the MassKara Festival. During my four-day work for a television coverage, an all-day and night shoot scheduled during the first day of my arrival was imperative.

Man and Carabao Statue at the Provincial Lagoon

During the day, our regional staff toured us to some of the sights and must-see landmarks of this charming city.

We went to the Bacolod Public Plaza where some stalls were offering snacks and quick meals. As much as we wanted to grab a bite, my crew and I were rushing before the sun goes down but vowed to return at night and enjoy some delectable eats that are readily available at the Bacolod Public Plaza.

A Gazebo at the Bacolod Public Plaza (back part)

One of the closed streets at the Bacolod Public Plaza (streets were closed for vehicles for the Masskara Festival)

Night time comes, we strolled the Bacolod Public Plaza dazzling with lights and was in the mood to party all-night with dance music playing aloud. There were several MassKara Festival items from accessories and a variety of MassKara designs. But the food lover in me passed up the opportunity to buy any masks and looked for something to satisfy my palate.

San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City

One of Bacolod City's streetfoods

A few steps from the San Sebastian Cathedral, the sight of this yellow-colored thin concoction caught my attention. I asked the two male vendors if what they were selling was crepe and both were looking for answers to my query. My colleague and friend Ate GG blurted, "anak pancake lang yan" (loosely translated : child it's a pancake). It seems to be funny now as to why would I thought that crepes will be sold as a street food but the thinness was very much similar to a crepe though it was cooked in a waffle-like open pan. The pancake was vibrant yellow and with very simple ingredients - flour, evaporated milk, sugar and margarine. Will the latter help in making me taller? Not really, but it sure satisfied my curiosity of how it tasted. Just a piece would do, as the margarine was over-powering for my taste.

March 26, 2012 Davao City, Davao del Sur, Philippines

STADIUM BUFFET RESTAURANT AND SPORTS LOUNGE : DAVAO CITY'S ALL-DAY BUFFET RESTAURANT

This is the first post of Eat To your Heart's Content's Monday Madness. I wanted to kick-off with something comfortable, meals that are not intimidating and an ambiance that sets them apart from their neighboring restaurants. So allow me to share with you one of my most memorable dining experiences in Davao City.

Back in 2010 when I heard about Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge, I instantly wanted to visit this new sports-themed restaurant. So when I visited Davao City in the last quarter of that year, I did not hesitate. Upon arriving Francisco Bangoy International Airport, my beau and I headed to this interesting themed-dining destination.

My eyes aglow as I spotted its facade beaming with vibrant hues of yellow, red and blue. As we entered the premises, a young lass greeted us and just a foot away was an array of all things delectable.

The restaurant is comparatively small compared to Manila's sports-themed restaurants like National Sports Grill in Makati City, but it surely did not disappoint its buffet breakfast offering. Priced at Php129, you get to savor a variety of dishes and desserts to perk your morning.

A sporty buffet table of Stadium Buffet Restaurant & Sports Lounge

Slices of white bread which you can toast yourself, white rice, a number of viands like sausages, beef loaf coated in eggs, pork & beans, and sauteed kangkong. Wanting something piping hot? Enjoy your create-your-own Mami noodles where you get to choose how much ingredients you put - julienne cut pork, carrot cut into strips and spring onions. Drinks like coffee is not part of the buffet though.

For sweet lovers like myself, I extremely enjoyed the banana cake and maja blanca in bite-sized squares while fruit lovers can partake the laid out fruits in season such as fresh watermelon and pineapple slices.

STADIUM BUFFET RESTAURANT AND SPORTS LOUNGE is an all-day buffet offering breakfast at Php129, lunch & dinner at Php149 and Merienda with eat-all-you-can Halo-Halo at Php99.

Check out STADIUM BUFFET RESTAURANT AND SPORTS LOUNGE for other deliriously delicious offerings and savor their goodness in every bite. As I always say, Live Well, Laugh Often, Eat To Your Heart's Content!

Eat To Your Heart's Content features Monday Madness. So what is this all about? It may be a certain dish that I could not stop salivating over and over. It may be about a dining destination worth a visit - notwithstanding distance, time or weather.

Monday Madness by Eat To Your Heart's Content

Monday Madness is all about completely shedding any restraint to indulge and living life to the fullest while eating to your heart's content.
