EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT RETURNS TO SUBI MONTE CAFE

I first featured Subi Monte Cafe in this site last January and talked about their delicious, mouth-watering desserts which I truly adore. I opted not to mention of their delectable dishes as it deserves a separate post.

Though plated simply, each serving is prepared with thought and care. Just like the two dishes I sampled with my friend and one of my constant eating buddy.

Subi Monte Burger

An order of their burger sandwich comes with some lightly salted french fries and slices of red tomatoes. What's different with the Subi Monte Burger? A trip to Singapore inspired them to wrap the burger in thin scrambled eggs which you can opt to drizzle with catsup or mayo.

Chicken Marano

Chicken Marano taken from the couple's surname is a pasta dish. The spaghetti noodles is loaded with creamy white sauce, breaded chicken strips and sliced button mushrooms then garnished with fresh chopped parsley. To make your dining even more filling, they've tossed in two halved-sliced toasted white bread.

Subi Monte Cafe's dishes and desserts are quite reasonable and filling too if you do not have a big appetite or dining in between big meals. It opens from 8am and closes at 11pm during weekdays (Mondays to Thursdays) and 12mn (Fridays to Saturdays).

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT ADORES AMICI

To say that I love pasta and pizza is a shame. I truly adore pasta dishes and hot-from-the-oven pizza. I would often say, give me pasta or pizza any day and I am one happy soul.

When it comes to a good pasta, simple is always best. Whether it's just tossed in garlic, tuna, some spices and olive oil or poured with white or tomato sauce, then added with choiced ingredients. The simpler the better.

Linguine Al Proscuitto E Tartufo

Amici is one of the few that delivers simple but great tasting pasta dishes. Linguine al Proscuitto e Tartufo appears to be a plain pasta concoction (though a definite Italian-sounding name) is made exquisite with the addition of choiced shiitake mushrooms and a drizzle of the famed truffle oil. And don't forget a generous sprinkling of parmesan cheese. The addition of truffle oil makes this dish truly memorable, the rich flavor lingers in your mouth and your brain dictates that you have been truly satisfied yet you want more, ironic but not even for a glutton.

Tutta Carne

As for their pizza offerings, just when it was being introduced, I ordered their Tutta Carne made with Italian sausages, ham and pepperoni. Their thin crust freshly hand-tossed dough gives a golden brown hue and is still pleasing when it turns cold.

TAGAYTAY CITY's BABY BACK RIBS at HAWAIIAN BBQ

To say that Hawaiian BBQ's offerings are delicious is an understatement. Their Baby Back Ribs is ultra tender, rich in flavor and overly addicting. The first time I was introduced to this heavenly slab of melt-in-your-mouth meat I was instantly transported to a whole world of pure eating bliss. Why wouldn't I, when at the helm of this scrumptious dining destination at Aguinaldo Highway in Tagaytay City (originated in the islands of Boracay) is no less than Chef Happy Ongpauco from the family of the famed Barrio Fiesta group.

Hawaiian BBQs Baby Back Ribs for a hearty breakfast

On my return, together with my eating buddies, we headed to Hawaiian BBQ and had our breakfast. To my surprise, they were also offering the Baby Back Ribs in their breakfast menu. For heavy morning eaters, this is a definite thumbs up!

Apart from her many food endeavors, she has also opened an adjacent restaurant called PAMANA (I shall feature this in my future posting), which I am sure many of you who frequents Tagaytay City has savored their mouth-watering family heirloom dishes.

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT DELIGHTS AT EDSA SHANGRI-LA's PAPARAZZI

Stepping into this elegant hotel-restaurant is similar to a first date - you done your best dress, wear a sexy pair of stilletos and hold your chic handbag then put on your best smile as you sip your Italian coffee and nibble on your al dente pasta. While during dates, you put your best foot forward, here at EDSA Shangri-La Hotel's Paparazzi, you experience best food forward.

During my visit at Paparazzi, I met Chef Salvatore who was spearheading the kitchen. Before joining the Philippine team in Shangri-La, he has mastered his craft in many restaurants in the US, the Bahamas, Buenos Aires and has worked at the Grand Hyatt in Dubai for 2 years. Despite having worked at many high-end dining destinations, Chef Salvatore remained true to his craft that the key to a dish is its flavor where presentation only comes second. Speaking like a true master of the kitchen, his dishes were served in all its simplicity but definitely full of flavors which you can savor with every bite.

Paparazzi's Conchiglioni con Melanza E Ricotta

Just like this simple bowl of Conchiglioni con Melanza E Ricotta with roasted eggplants, fresh tomatoes and ricotta.

Paparazzi's Fusilli Grande al Salmone

Same goes for the Fusilli Grande al Salmone made with smoked salmon with a creamy thick tomato sauce. As for dessert, who can resist Tiramisu - this all-time favorite Italian dessert will definitely perk you up. As the name suggests, with layers of liquered-soaked ladyfingers (or sponge cake), mascarpone cheese and the foamy custard zabaglione made even lovelier with whipped cream and shaved chocolate on top.

Borrowing the words of Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and the City The Movie, Part 1) "simple and classic," For me, these best describes a true Italian meal.

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT AT DAVAO CITY'S DENCIA'S RESTAURANT

After a scorching day trip at Samal Island, I was extremely famished as we headed to downtown Davao City. My beau was craving for something Japanese so we rushed to Tsuru Japanese Restaurant but was unfortunately still close at around 4pm. Our grumbling tummy could not wait for an hour. Heck, we cannot wait even for a minute to order food and gorge!

Since we both enjoy Pinoy comfort food, we opted for Dencia's Restaurant just nearby. We ordered a large bowl of piping hot Lomi, a serving of Lechon Kawali, Arroz Caldo and Tokwa't Baboy. For dessert, I had a slice of Mango Float. Let's dig in!

Dencia's Restaurant generous serving of Lechon Kawali

The steaming white rice was perfect with the crunchy chopped Lechon Kawali. The latter was crackling in my mouth with every bite. I did not even bother with their dipping sauce as the deep-fried pork was well-seasoned, and their generous serving at Php161 was good for two.

LOMI!!! OVERflowing of delicious Lomi

The Lomi served was quite overwhelming. A large bowl was overflowing with the flavorful lomi. And did I say the serving was OVERwhelming? #HappyTummy

Arroz Caldo and Tokwa't Baboy, this delightful combo is one reason why I want to live in Davao City. Pure bliss!

As if the Lomi served was not enough, the large bowl of Arroz Caldo at Php55 and plateful Tokwa't Baboy (Php58) was a tandem I could not pass the moment I read it in their menu. When in Manila, I hardly could find a decent place serving good arroz caldo and tokwa't baboy - often they are priced unreasonably and the serving is quite small. So I often end up cooking Arroz Caldo myself. But lo and behold, Dencia's serving were generous and downright scrumptious.

Mango Float! I love mangoes, need I say more?!

My meal would not be complete without a sweet ending punctuated to it. So I ordered a serving of Mango Float (my beau was already full at this time, so it was a good thing as I get to eat it ALL by myself!) Mildly sweet and creamy, at Php58 this was such a comfort although I wish the mangoes could have been fresher and sweeter, then this would be an ending of unabashed eating bliss.

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT VISITS CAFE ADRIATICO PREMIERE

Cafe Adriatico Premiere started it all. This is LJC Group's first restaurant in 1979 that paved the way for more of LJC's delightful restaurants. The late great Larry J. Cruz is not only a man of vision but a well-rounded person very much evident in his dining establishments - from the menu, the ambiance and down to each table's setting.

Cafe Adriatico's Lola Ising's Adobo Rice

I have heard about their well-loved Chocolate Eh, a cup of chocolate drink inspired by Noli Me Tangere but what I cannot forget and will always be longing for when adobo comes to mind is their version - Lola Ising's Adobo Rice. The Adobo-flavored rice is topped with three generous chunks of pork belly that was cooked over slow fire in their special adobo marinade and tons of strongly flavored garlic cloves. The ultra tender pork and flavorful rice left me breathless.

The Philippines' varied regions has produced quite a number of Adobo - many versions perhaps totalling a hunded. With adobo this good, who needs another version?

EAT TO YOUR HEART’S CONTENT FEATURES CECIL’S SNACK INN & BAKESHOPPE, INC.

By November 27, 2011, Cecil’s Snack Inn and Bakeshoppe, Inc. will mark its 40th year in giving Davaoeños and food lovers unpretentious delicious dishes day in and out.

During one of my travels to Davao City last year, it was a priority for me to visit their main establishment in Anda at the downtown area. A no-frills dining area can be had once you step inside and you have to go straight to their display section near the counter before ordering. Choices are displayed so I did not see any handheld menu and their pastries on display will leave you no choice but order at least one dessert to satisfy your sweet craving.

Pancit Lug-Lug

Known for two merienda fares, I ordered Pancit Lug-lug and my beau preferred the steaming bowl of Batchoy. For dessert we opted for their Durian bestsellers - Durian Roll and Durian Pie.

Batchoy

What seemed as a simple meal as snacks happens to be a delight. The lug-lug and batchoy were both overflowing with ingredients and the taste was simply umami

Durian Roll

Durian Pie

As for their dessert, I preferred the Durian roll while my beau instantly finished the Durian pie. The roll has a subtle taste of durian, with bits of nuts on top and a chiffon-like cake that easily melts in the mouth. I also tasted a spoonful of the durian pie and it was somehow overwhelming to me. This was the first time I was actually eating a version of durian apart from durian candies. But for my beau, who enjoyed every bite, he said this was just like eating an actual fresh durian - with all the flavors in every munch. Durian Pie was awarded last December 2009 by Inquirer Lifestyle as one of the best desserts in the country.

EAT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT AT IL PONTICELLO

Il Ponticello has been serving authentic Italian cuisine for more than a decade now. True to its name, meaning Little Bridge, Il Ponticello has been bridging the flavors of the various regions of Italy in every dish they serve.

Undergoing a minor facelift in 2008, Il Ponticello continues to cater to their regulars and has managed to engross new clientele with their creatively organized themed nightly events and festivals. They have come up with movie nights, takes you back to the hits of the 80s, bands play the alternative and is even a good place to celebrate birthdays with their Blue Card Night - Birthday Bash Nights where one can enjoy discounts.

Partying is not all that matters when in Il Ponticello as they advocate social responsibility by donating the proceeds of the sales of their old furniture for a good cause.

For Antipasti, they serve a visually appetizing Pietanza di Salmone which is made with asparagus tips wrapped in smoked salmon and topped with dill mustard. The slightly pungent asparagus coated with firm texture and rich flavor of the fresh salmon and the yellow creamy mustard explodes in every bite.

Il Ponticello serves one of the best tasting pizza in town - brick oven baked, their thin Pizze (pizza) may be served in two variants - like this one, Gongonzola and Montagnola. The Italian gorgonzola cheese is made from cow's milk that is pungent in flavor and becomes crumbly as it ages while the Montagna has toppings of salami milano and pepperoni salami, prosciutto di parma (a well-seasoned Italian ham that is usually cured and air-dried), and mortadella (may be similar to America's bologna but the Italian version is smoked sausage and flavored with coriander and white wine thus possessing a delicate and mild flavor). Their pizza comes in two sizes, six inches and 12.

Still have room for their decadent desserts? Check their luscious Chocolate Cake.

EAT TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT AT COSTALES NATURE FARMS

Laguna's most notable tourist attraction may be the Pagsanjan Falls for adventure seekers but a weekend drive to this charming province is also a haven to food lovers of all ages and affluence.

Located in Barangay Gagalot in Majayjay, Laguna is an impressive 10-hectare family owned farmland filled with an orchard of fruit-bearing trees of ranbutan, guava and lanzones to name a few. A vegetable garden is filled with a variety of lettuce, heads of broccoli and cauliflower and herbs like tarragon and mint. They also allocated a livestock area where they breed organic pig and free-range chicken. As if the area is not filled with all these delectables that's right for the picking, they have two 50-meter pond which houses fingerlings of Tilapia.

Going organic : pork and free-range chicken
Trying out some of their homegrown products, we sampled their Organic Roasted Pig and Roasted Free-Range Chicken. The roasted pig was lean, tender and grilled from a flavorful blend. It was thinly sliced when served with the addition of edible ferns and fresh tomatoes. As for the free-range chicken, it was huge. I am used to buying a little over a kilo of one whole chicken from the supermarket but their free-range chicken, grown in about four months was about three to four kilos a piece.

For those wanting to have a taste of the farm life, Costales Nature Farms has opened their area to students and agriculture enthusiast for a farm tour and enjoy their Pick & Pay where you can grab a basket and pick your favorite fruits in season.

WHISTLESTOP RESTAURANT

Bangkok Noodles
Whistlestop Restaurant opened in 1977 with a very casual ambiance. The original owners closed it down in 2005, but good thing that businessman Lex Ledesma and restaurateur Dennis Gan of the famed Oyster Boy Group, decided to re-open Whistlestop Restaurant.
